Thirty Six
There are some things that used to be fun to do on a special occasion that Covid has made 'the norm:' (1) Takeout and delivery, and (2) lavish meals at the dining table. I remember getting so excited when my parents decided to order pizza for delivery when I was a child. And I remember the long Thanksgiving dinner table being such an occasion. But after 4 years of eating mostly at home, those things don't feel like celebratory things to do anymore.
So, we moved my birthday to the backyard. Picnic style.
The two rolls on the left are made of plant based fish! I'm quite impressed that it's actually pretty good. For dessert: A chocolate chip Crumbl cookie with a candle in it. Because they are delicious but too indulgent to eat on any other day.
Martha and Mariko surprised me with a surprise visit to bring a handmade bouquet - the centerpiece for tonight's picnic. I'm so touched.
PS.
Trying to be present to enjoy a relaxing meal is extremely difficult with a toddler. Luckily, she didn't knock the whole thing down, so I'll take that as a win!
