Saturday: Barney Surveys The Landscape
We took Barney on a trip to Belize City this morning. Lest you think we are in the habit of driving our cat around for no reason, he needed a blood test and the vet in Belize City is the only one equipped to do that and process it (in contrast to the local vet in Roaring Creek who is usually drunk by 10.00). Barney doesn’t love being in his basket for long journeys but he’s very calm if he’s allowed out and can look out the window. So one of us sits in the back to make sure he’s ok.
We were back home by mid-day. I then had a nap as I was feeling very off-colour. I think it was something I ate at the research station yesterday. I felt a little better after a sleep but still not quite 100%.
We had a very nice sociable evening. A colleague of mine got in touch a few months ago to say she was moving to Belize with her husband, who has been posted here with the army. I didn’t previously know her but we’ve chatted a few times and this evening they came down for the night. We showed them round the compound, went to ‘Wings & Feathers’ for a few drinks and then ‘Coco Gardens’ for dinner (I struggled a bit with dinner but really hadn’t wanted to cancel or postpone).
It was a really pleasant evening and we all agreed we miss this kind of interaction (they are experiencing some challenges similar to those we are facing).
Caroline’s husband goes by the glorious name of Spud. Luckily I didn’t call him King Edward by mistake.
