Phase One
After years of pondering, we've decided to convert our attic boxroom into a WC/Shower Room. Our neighbours in the other half of the semi did so some years back so we know it's feasible. One slight drawback of old houses like ours is that they don't seem to have as many bathrooms as modern houses - we only have one (plus a separate WC so 2 loos in total) which requires careful scheduling when the family come to stay (somehow we coped OK when the kids were growing up!).
Phase One was to have a Velux roof window installed, which took place yesterday. They warned us that the work might be the final straw for the old cracked ceiling but in fact they managed to avoid that - although we know extensive replastering will be needed anyway.
(Note: this photo was taken with my fisheye lens to include as much as possible - the room isn't really distorted like it looks here and the window is actually rectangular.)
Of course one issue is what to do with all the junk which used to be stored in this room. Currently it's being stored in the two attic bedrooms but that's not a long term solution. I suspect a large rubbish skip may be necessary (along with many trips to charity shops!).
