Opium and anaesthesia

Celebrating the poppy. The use of opium, derived from the juice of the opium poppy, dates to 3400 BC when cultivated in Lower Mesopotamia and until the 19th Century with the use of chloroform and ether, was the most effective way to relieve pain and produce a degree of anaesthesia. Recently, the Association of Anaesthetists (a body that represents Anaesthetists in Great Britain and Ireland) changed its emblem to a logo  based on the seed head of the opium poppy when viewed from above as in today’s blip.
The discomfort I am in from my shoulder has not necessitated the use of opium but I have been taking a milder derivative, codeine, at night to allow me to sleep.
With thank to BikerBear for hosting Flower Friday
