If you can't beat them...

Lytham Windmill

Today was one of our Social Club trips.  To Lytham St Annes, somewhere Clickychick and I had never been.  Having grown up in Whitehaven the coast was quite a draw for CC.  After an early lunch we headed towards the sea.

We have visited a good number of watermills but never a Windmill.  This one is converted into a museum and unusually is free.  There are some of the "gubbins" are still intact inside.  Being used to watermills it seemed strange that the millstones were on the first floor.  Getting them up there must have been fun.

There are records of a mill in roughly this spot since 1190 but the current mill was built in 1805 and leased for 7/- (35p) pe rannum.  Some of the internal workings were from redundant/older mills.

The building behind the mill is the old lifeboat station.  I suspect the coast line must have changed since it was built as it is quite a long way from water these days.
