Gypsy Lee….
….the village somewhat reluctantly hosts an annual travellers fair, originally a focus for horse trading, a bit like the larger and more famous version in Appleby. This fair once attracted Gypsy families from most parts of Scotland, northern England and Ireland, to conduct trade. However, today it is little more than a four-day get-together on the village green with a handful of ponies tethered to stakes to create the illusion of a horse festival. Fair day is on 18th July each year and Wikipedia tells us that it remains a popular opportunity for locals to have their fortunes predicated. Most locals I’ve spoken to thus far predict misfortune at the hands of the travellers.
In other news, the roofing lads turned up and put in a decent shift. I predict I won’t see them again for several days!
