Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Returning to the elements

Back in 1828, Newburgh became the first port in Scotland to have a Lifeboat Station, provided by the Shipwreck Institution. The RNLI, as the Institution was to become, based a lifeboat in Newburgh until 1961, when it was moved North, to Peterhead.
The winter gales and high tides, together with general neglect, have severely damaged the boathouse and the concrete ramp down which the boat was launched. The large rocks have recently been put in place by the owner in an effort to prevent further damage.
