Three Little Birds

On 26th June I reported from the House Martin's nest, with some trepidation it must be said.

I have kept a very close eye on proceedings and have been watching the feverish activity around the nest. Mum and Dad are in attendance, visiting the nest every five or six minutes, bringing in food comprising of insects caught on the wing. I am in awe of these tiny little birds, spending the whole day seeking airborne food to bring to the nest. I have seen them coming and going and heard the insistent chirruping from the unseen chicks, begging for more and more food. Then today, today, I saw the first beaks gaping as the adult birds flew hither and thither, diligently  catching food and delivering it to the chicks.

I saw three, and think there can only be three as the nest seems tiny to my eye. I am fearful for their safety and wellbeing. I will remain fearful until they reach that time when they can fly and begin their own journey through the endless skies.

It is fascinating to watch this little drama unfolding in the eaves of our house.  I wish them well and hope to follow up with more pictures as things develop.

Fingers crossed.
