The Lozarithm Lens

Calne (Tuesday 16th July 2024)

I was puzzled by this frieze appearing in Phelps Parade today. Who was this Pries being commemorated for something 250 years ago?

I now realise that the name when completed will be that of Joseph Priestley, who moved with his family to the Green in Calne in 1773 and quickly took up a position and friendship with Lord Shelburne at nearby Bowood House where he worked as librarian and tutor. The workload allowed him time to pursue both his scientific and theological interests, as well as becoming Shelburne's political adviser, and it was there he made his independent discovery of oxygen by the thermal decomposition of mercuric oxide, which he successfully isolated in 1774.

Lozarithm's Lozarhythm Of The Day:
Tobi Lark - Challenge My Love (recorded 1966, Detroit MI)
This is my choice from this week's Cerys Matthews show. It has recently been issued as a single in the UK by Ace Records, but was first released in the US in 1966 by the Topper label. It was written and produced by Dave Hamilton, a big name in Detroit at the time who did some work for Motown. Tobi Lark was born Bessie Grace Gupton in Alabama in 1941, but was  raised in Detroit. Her mother sang in a gospel choir. Shortly after this release Tobi Lark (aka Tobi Legend) relocated to Canada.
