Butser Ancient Farm. A step back in time.

So what did we decide to do on our 51st Wedding Anniversary today?
We went to this wonderful place nestled in the lee of the Downs.
It is a large site beautifully kept where authentically ancient buildings beginning from the Anglo-Saxon era through the Roman occupation, (working backwards in time) on through the Stone and Bronze ages up to the Iron Age.
The dedicated volunteers also wore clothes which had been made using the same kind of hand made cloth, or leather, and animal skins.
The lovely young lady in the main photo is wearing a hand made, hand spun, and hand woven top. They wear shoes or boots appropriate to the time.
This young lady is studying Old English at Oxford University, and is a great fan of Tolkien.,
In one of her essays she invented her own Tolkien-like Middle English.
The other young lady in extras was whittling wood, but just as passionate about Ancient history. She is in her second year of a PhD, but studying Chemistry! A very particular niche aspect which although she told us what it is called and involved, she did say it would only be of a particular interest to scientists doing the same thing.
She is wearing a handwoven and spun garment.
We spent ages chatting to them both.
We moved on from there to the reconstructed Roman Villa which had beautifully laid mosaic flooring. All sourced from genuine tiles.
It was lunchtime by this point so we went to the café and sat outside in the warm sunshine to enjoy a sandwich and a drink.
After which we went on to work our way round the other buildings from the Bronze and Stone ages, to the Iron Age, where it ended.
You can obviously do the “tour” the other way round and go forward in history instead of back as we did it.
Fabulous place for schools and children.
They have lots of presentations and re-enactments.
It is time for some dinner before the Match!
I won’t end here without mentioning the news about the shooting at the Republican rally. It doesn’t bode well for what will happen next in this supposedly Presidential campaign.
