V for Victorian Byzantine building in Victoria St.
Bristol Byzantine is a Variety of Byzantine Revival architecture that was popular in the city of Bristol from about 1850 to 1880. It was applied mainly to industrial buildings such as warehousing and factories and many have been demolished. Several of the warehouses around the harbour have survived though including the Arnolfini which now houses an art gallery, Clark's Wood Company warehouse, St Vincent's Works in Silverthorne Lane, the Wool Hall in St Thomas Street and several buildings in Victoria Street of which this picture is one.
Its characteristics were a robust and simple outline, materials with character and colour - mainly Pennant stone and brick, the frequent use of rock faced stone, and upper floors unified through either horizontal or vertical grouping of window openings,
Decorative details often derive from Venetian, North Italian and Moorish examples.
