Iskanderkul Lake

This morning we left Dushanbe and headed to the Fann Mountains and Iskanderkul Lake.
The Fann Mountains are one of two great ranges in Tajikistan (the other is the Pamirs) with peaks up to 18,008ft (5,489m). Iskanderkul Lake (named after Alexander the Great and is thought to be the final resting place of his beloved horse, Bucephalus) sits at 7,218ft (2,200m). The scenery is spectacular but the journey is long so we are glad when we eventually arrive and get a chance to explore the area. Tajikistan's biggest waterfall, a 131ft (40m) cascade, is known as Tajikistan Niagara but I think whoever named it maybe hadn't seen those other famous falls. The glacial lake is stunning and said to be the jewel of the Fann Mountains and one of the most beautiful in the former Soviet Union.
