Living my dream

There's a lion deer hare rabbit mouse perhaps nothing in this long grass, but I'm going to sniff thoroughly to make sure that I'm protecting Mum from wild beasts.

I gardened with G for two whole hours this morning. We sowed heaps of flower seeds, then planted out some pots of ranunculus and anemone which I'd sown for her a couple or three months ago.

By kneeling most of the time I protected my back and I felt only a little achy afterwards. To be on the safe side I forewent my "Sensible 40 minutes" in the garden at home, and instead I lay down and watched Wimbledon.

There was upsetting news from Scotland overnight. My lovely sister in law has been increasingly unwell for seven or eight months, and has finally been diagnosed with bone cancer in her spine. It is just awful for her and my brother.

She is lined up for radiotherapy and various drugs, and the consultant is cautiously optimistic she will pull through. But there's a challenging road ahead of them, as anybody who has ever had anything to do with cancer knows only too well.

We would all like to spare our loved ones these times. Magic wands are in depressingly short supply.
