We stopped at Lanark on our way to visit a friend who we have known since before we were married.  Due to unfortunate circumstances she has been unable to see her husband who is confined to their home while she is having palliative care nearby.  It is so sad to see how two very popular and gregarious people are suffering after a lifetime of hosting many musical friends from throughout Europe.  Living in a small community in the depths of the country can have disadvantages if family and friends do not live locally

One person who was very popular with Scots and is still commemorated was William Wallace.   He was the leader of a rebellion in the first Scottish War of Independence in 1297 when he killed the English Sheriff of Lanark in retaliation of the murder of his wife and continued to fight against English domination until eventually he was captured and his body cut up with parts sent to various towns as a warning. Two gable ends in Lanark have recently been painted with his image with a humorous cartoon made of his life.  I have tried to make a collage so it is easier to read.
