National Aboriginal and Islanders Day

This morning we went up to Napperby to check out the gorge walk.  We had actually intended to do the Reservoir walk but got a little confused.  It worked in our favour because when we pulled up at the Gorge walk a group of people were setting up an event for observation of Aboriginal and Islander Day.  They invited us to join in.

It was great.  In a natural rock amphitheater they had an open fire and a cook up.  This local was charring kangaroo tails in the fire then scraping off the burnt blackened hair.  The tails were then wrapped in foil and buried in the fire.

There was also damper made in camp ovens, chicken and veges.  It was wonderful to not only participate in the meal but also to mix with and chat to the locals.

Our thanks to them for welcoming a couple of kiwi women to join them.  We even got called 'our special guests from New Zealand'.  Such an unexpected day.

We also fitted in our gorge walk - Rock hopping up a creek bed for part of the way (see extra).

We're in Port Augusta tonight.  Heading inland tomorrow.
