If you can't beat them...

Juvenile Robin ( Erithacus rubecula )

We usually have a regular Robin around the garden, earlier in the season we had a pair.  They had to be a pair there wasn't any fighting which there would have been had one been holding territory.  Suddenly they both disappeared.  We thought this was just the usual being secretive to protect the nest.  They never reappeared.  Now this juvenile is a regular visitor.

When I was in infant school I remember a teacher telling us female Robins were brown so they couldn't be seen so easily when on the nest.  I told her she was wrong both sexes were the same.  She didn't seem convinced so the next day I took in my Bird Book - an Observers Guide if I remember rightly.
