What. A. Day.

Today started at midnight, eagerly watching results! Ali headed off to bed at 1pm after falling asleep on the sofa. Most people know that I’m not a night person and so there was disbelief that I was still awake. This is what election night does to me.

It was super interesting to see the results coming in through the night but it was the 3-4am slot that I was most interested in. Even though Jeremy Vine had predicted early in the evening that Shrewsbury might swing, I was not prepared to believe it. Musicalblips and I were messaging up until 4am, generally exhausted but not wanting to miss the moment. The results came in at about 4.20am. If Labour won in Shrewsbury, I presumed it would be a very slim victory. I was totally unprepared for an 11,000 majority. Delighted and relieved in equal measures. Our (outgoing) MP is an utter disgrace and there felt a total sense of justice seeing him removed. A few moments of joy before collapsing into bed. It was light outside and the cat thought it was breakfast time.

I woke at 7am and knocked on Ali’s door, desperate to tell her the news!! From then on it was a day of celebration! So many wonderful conversations filled with joy and hope. I’m so pleased that we have a government who seem eager to govern with a deep sense of service but more than that, I’m so delighted that locally, we’ll have an MP who is present, who listens and who wants the best for our town.

I managed a little nap in the afternoon before going out to celebrate with friends. A long and exhausting day but one filled with more hope than I’ve felt for a long time.

I promised myself that I’d crack open my champagne if Danny K got voted out. In the end, Ali opened her bottle, so now I need to think of another momentous occasion to open mine!
