Grafted Mango

Today the teachers took a break from their training and mentoring duties and went to see the farm, the health clinic and the factory.
Here, Niamh and Noreen are seen with Benidicto, where he explains the grafting process and the difference between budding and grafting.
This is a newly grafted mango plant where the rootstock was grown from a local variety seed and an improved variety scion was grafted on.
This year we will produce nine varieties of mango on our Lusangazi farm.
Some we sell, but most we give for free to groups and communities we serve.
Just a little note about the programme for Primary School Teachers;
This is the fifth year, where very experienced and skilled Irish Primary school teachers give up their Summer break, pay their own way and
work in up-skilling their Malawian colleagues. This Year Malawian teachers are being trained to take on the training themselves.
The course is on English and now Mathematics and based solely on the Malawi curriculum. It has almost zero cost and impacts over 25,000 students in two districts.
Thanks goes to our Irish friends and also the the amazing co-operation of the Malawian Ministry, the District Education managers, the Inspectorate and the teachers who give up so much to participate.
