A (short) day in Weymouth

We decided to take Mr W's brother to Weymouth, a place he loves, and to make things a bit different, we decided to go by train.
Frome Station has one of the prettiest waiting rooms I've ever seen. Little did we know that waiting would be the theme for the day...
Our train left on time and the first 15 minutes of our journey went well. But between Bruton and Castle Cary, the train stopped. We waited. And we waited... The guard kept us updated: "We can see smoke 100 metres ahead of us", "The signal cable seems to be smouldering", "A wooden sleeper is burning", "The fire brigade are coming" and finally "The fire brigade are here - you may see them walking past the train". And yes, 3 fireman walked past, with 2 handheld fire extinguishers. Because of course we're in rural Somerset, on a single track line that still has wooden sleepers and with no roads nearby.
Anyway, in due course we got going. We dropped the firemen off at Castle Cary station, and journey on to Yeovil, where we were informed that the train would terminate and we would have to pick up the next train to Weymouth. It's a 2-hourly service, and the next train was running late. We finally got into Weymouth 2 & a quarter hours late. We walked along the front, found a lovely pub for lunch, wandered along a few side streets, took a couple of photos - and then went to catch the train home.
And guess what? Our train left on time and the first 30 minutes of our journey went well. But at Maiden Newton, the train stopped. We waited. And we waited... The control centre had sent a train down the single track section of the line and we had to wait until the line was clear. The same thing happen at Yeovil.
Eventually, we arrived back in Frome half an hour late. We spent roughly twice as long travelling as we actually spent in Weymouth. It'll be a long time before I get on another train!
