Fly

Newquay has an active and enthusiastic gig rowing club.  The pilot gigs were the long, low, fast rowing boats that raced out to meet incoming vessels, in the 18th and 19th century, in order to win the right to ferry cargo ashore.  Most of the boats raced today are modern but made in the traditional way.  The Newquay club has races around the bay three evenings a week.  On the other evenings the novices and junior teams go out to practice, as they were this evening in "Fly".

The World Gig Racing Championships were held in the Isles of Scilly in May.  The first thing the Newquay teams had to do before paticipating was to row across to the Isles of Scilly!
