Seventy years ago today on the 10th of July 1943 the Allies launched The Italian Campaign by invading Sicily. Within 15 days Benito Mussolini "Il Duce," the Italian Dictator, had been overthrown and by the 8th of August the Italians had negotiated an armistice. Sadly the German army simply turned on their former allies and the Italian campaign continued for many many months. Thousands of soldiers lost their lives on both sides, thousands of families were made homeless and became refugees or were injured or died during this campaign.

War is an awful awful thing but surely it is also a crime to forget or ignore history and the wars of the past which have led to our current peace.

In Canterbury today were a few old soldiers, now into their nineties, remembering The Italian Campaign and the part they played. As usual the God Squad tried to turn it into a religious occasion but thankfully it was much more poignant than that.
