Ancient Yew Tree

Today we sat in the shade overlooking a pond lined with tree ferns in the Lost Gardens of Heligan, near Mevagissey in Cornwall. We were joined by a wood turner on holiday from Scotland. Behind us was a large Yew tree which our new aquaintance estimated to be at least 5 - 600 hundred years old. This is a detail of the trunk of this magnificent tree. The extra shows a detail of the sleeping giant which slumbers in woodland in another part of the garden. Giants form a major strand of Cornish folklore.
