Diary of an Edinburgher

By LadyMarchmont

Lady Button Wednesday!

A leisurely start today, and clouds. Much cooler. In fact, as we waited for the bus home (and they seem to come in pairs, just like Edinburgh) it got quite cold in the breeze.

A visit to the Little Mermaid could not be postponed until Monday, to fit in with Lazooligirl's legendary Lady Button Mondays (LBMs). We got the bus to the Library (which is an amazing modern building on the river and worth an explore on a wet day) and then used the same ticket to get the ferry up river. What wonderful public transport!

We had been to see the Little Mermaid when we visited Copenhagen years ago in cold wet weather. But today, there were millions of folk around her. We were there for ages. It was the best entertainment of the day. I took some photos when the coast was unusually clear, but she is rather boring on her own but felt the extra colour of the tourists added a bit of interest.

I was kept busy offering to take photos or even (wouldn't happen with a bridge camera) being asked to take photos for people. I had extreme camera envy.

I missed the best shot, though. I was lining up a shot for two people when I noticed a man in a yellow and black striped tee shirt had leapt across the rocks and was touching the Little Mermaid's lady button. I wasn't quick enough to put down their camera and whip mine out to get a one handed shot.

Apparently she's the most photographed statue in the world, and I've certainly never seen such crowds around Greyfriar's Bobby!

We walked back past the palace and back to Nyhavyn, which, despite the now grey skies (glad I got my shot yesterday) was still hoachin', possibly with the people still there from yesterday.

We made our sandwich lunch at home, as yesterday, and then left them on the kitchen table... so that, and the decidedly cooler day (and my sore legs and feet) made the decision to go back home mid afternoon rather easy.

Have spent a leisurely hour or so watching 'Money Never Sleeps' the sequel to Wall Street, and having our picnic lunch out of the wind. Although there is only Danish TV (of course), our house swappers have dozens of DVDs that I am happy to watch.

Emmental cheese, and some reasonably priced red wine to follow. Who needs Danish pastries? In fact, I have not seen any pastry shops whatsoever.

Neither have I seen any tattoo shops, but tattoos abound. I shall look for both shops tomorrow.
