TSR2
The most amazing aircraft we never had.
Tactical Strike and Reconnaissance Mach 2.
5 were built, all but this and another were broken up. This one had no engines fitted when the cut came and it went to the Cranwell Research Establishment as a study vehicle before going to Duxford.
Service ceiling in excess of 60,000ft, range over 2000km, could carry kiloton sized nuclear warheads at mach 2.3 (50mph faster than Concorde) or conventional weapons.
I worked for the MOD at the time and jungle drums suggested it had radar controlled fly by wire for low level flight, but that could have been wishful thinking in 1965.
All the panels were machined from aluminium and the joints are so close you couldn't get a sheet of paper in. Also it had the capability of taking off from a temporary short grass strip and of being field maintained.
Officially it was costing too much, unofficially the cousins across the sea were scared witless as they didn't have anything like it at the time and were afraid we'd sell it to other air forces.........still seems a bit draconian to smash up the planes, melt down all the parts that had been made and to destroy the drawings and data manuals.
