The Dresden Frauenkirche

This incredible church was destroyed by Allied bombing in 1945. Several small sections of the church were left standing, but most of it was a pile of rubble.

Reconstruction began in May 1994. Many of the original stones had been marked and numbered so that the architects knew where they came from. The rest had to be remade. The old fire-darkened stones can be seen against the light-coloured new stones. 45% of the building is from the original stones.

After the completion of the internal construction, the church was consecrated in October 2005.
The height of the church to the top of the cross is 300’. The viewing platform in the bell tower is at 221’ or 67 metres.
It was a slow climb of almost 400 steps to the top. The view is seen in the first Extra. The second Extra is another angle taken at ground level.

Cost of reconstruction was 180 million dollars, with donations coming from around the world. The church is Lutheran.
