Hummingbird Hawkmoth?
Perhaps it is a young specimen. I found it on the inside of my recycling bin when I was putting it out. It seemed very dozy and then opened its wings and the underwings were bright orange with a black stripe running across them at the bottom. Of course I couldn't grab my camera in time to take the splash of colour, just missed the opportunity. We often see them in the summer when fully grown and hovering in the red Valerian growing on the garden wall and they appear much larger and bulkier.
