..endeavour to persevere

Buttermere Horseshoe

Jess was marshalling on the Buttermere Horseshoe Fell race. There is a "short" loop 13miles./5000ft ascent and the Darren Holloway Memorial race, 22miles/8250ft ascent.
I was a free agent roaming about with my camera. Fell racing is a bit of an extreme sport, checkpoints have to be made along the route and recorded by means of dibbing in to a race recording system.
Navigation is by reference to an OS map and compass, with some helpful notes, eg   "At boulder, push up left through bracken for 10m then follow it's top edge..."
There is no requirement to follow a path at all or any other competitor as long as checkpoints are visited, consequently it is not unusual to see competitors spread all over the side of a hill, especially when descending when t is a case of who dares wins at times.
My blip had to be a girl who was tracking her partner in the race while mostly carrying her dog in a rucksack, a pup but at 13kg not a exactly a lightweight.
In extras , an example of the extreme routes taken by runners. In the upper right of the shot is a runner who had scrambled up the side of Moss Force Waterfall, I spoke to him later and enquired as to his sanity, his reply was that he preferred a direct route..
