National Indigenous Peoples Day
For generations, many Indigenous groups and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on or near June 21 because of the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year (source: Government of Canada)
This is a print of the Xwaaqw'um Project Logo by Simuletse (Stuart Pagaduan), a Quw'utsun artist. I know Simuletse and many of his family. The project included carvings that are installed along the trail I often walk down Xwaaqw'um. I have a drum with a hummingbird design painted by him just for me and a print of his painting of hummingbirds that's one of my favourites. I wanted to blip something with a personal connection for National Indigenous Peoples Day. Some information about and a photo of Simuletse with a paddle he carved.
I am so grateful for everything that my Indigenous friends have taught me and shared with me. I wish that more people would open their minds and hearts to others and value diversity in our world.
I was upstairs posting my blip and I heard the strangest noise. G was sitting outside and he called me, because a sandhill crane was walking through our place! Not a bird we've ever seen or heard, apparently a common migrant through BC. Here is a link (about 20 seconds into the video) to what we heard. G got a better look at it, but I did get a glimpse of it. Amazing!
