Font cover St Mary's church Thirsk

Today we were of on a Social Club trip to Thirsk.  It is amazing how much you see on the journey when you aren't driving and much higher above the road.  Unusually, well unusually for this year it was sunny and hot.

In the afternoon we took the opportunity of cooling down by having a wander round St Mary's church.  Churches are always cool because of the thick stone walls.  Much of the carving on pews etc was strongly reminiscent of our own church in Greystoke.  One thing that stood out as different was the font cover.  Ours is rather small and plain.  I wondered how they manage to remove it to use the font.  It seems there is some form of counter balance mechanism connected to the cable running from the top.
