Best Churchyard in Devon 2022

Had a great day today visiting a lovely Devon church, and wandering around its award winning churchyard….and on a glorious sunny day too. We were on a guided tour with the Curious Club, one of our favourite societies, who give us the opportunity to visit unusual places. The church is All Saints Church, in Kenton, a village not far from Exeter. This church and churchyard was rescued from the threat of closure, and given new life. The church yard was transformed from a neglected wilderness into a wildlife haven, with expert advice, and the church underwent renovations.
This was all done by volunteers who began work and planning after lockdown.
The church dates from1450 - 1500, and is grade one listed. Inside it is noted for its woodcarving, rood screen, and reredos. There are four commonwealth war graves. Very sadly none of these men, naval men mainly, died in combat, but shortly after, succumbing to illness, now routinely cured,  or industrial accidents in the forestry industry nearby. Sad stories
Afterwards we had tea and cakes with our guides and volunteers. A grand church to visit with a lovely living churchyard , managed for conservation. Honestly retirement doesn’t get more exciting than this. So enjoyable.
