Gone Fishing
I find Arachnids in general, interesting. I find Six-spotted fishing spiders, aka dock spiders, absolutely fascinating! They are in the 'nursery web' spider family and are found in wetland areas throughout North America. D. triton takes its scientific name from the Greek god 'Triton', Poseidon's son.
The female is larger than the male, 2.4 inches (60mm) long including the legs. Six dark spots on its underside name it.
D. triton hunts during the day (diurnal) and is capable of catching fish up to five times its body size, using venom to kill their prey. They dine happily on terrestrial insects, tadpoles, frog and small fish. They have excellent eyesight and can dive under water up to 7.1inches (18cm) to capture their next meal.
