Last Hike

Our trip is winding down!!! For our final hike destination we took the train to Gualdo Tandino, a spoke direction we haven’t yet explored from our hub in Spello. Gualdo Tandino is another Umbrian medieval town nestled next to another Umbrian mountain. We cruised through the town….first stopping for the obligatory due cappucini e cornetti at another ubiquitous Italian bar/cafe. We walked through the grounds of another medieval fortress museum juxtaposed with modern art (we did not go in the museum). Exited the upper “gate’ of the city’s walls and climbed up the mountain to another remote hermitage. Wildflowers, birdsong, woodland, meadow…all so beautiful. The steep climb is always worth the amazing panoramic view. We gained almost 3000 feet in elevation and hiked almost 8 miles. When we returned to town, we stopped at another free-flowing spring water fountain to wash the sweat off our faces and filled our water bottles with cool water. Back to the bar/cafe for another appertivi of refreshing, brilliant orange Aperol Spritz’. Back on the train. Exhausted we slowly haul ourselves back up through Spello to our apartment. But it was so worth it.
