Hobbs's Run

Mosman Bay

Sydney's best feature is often thought to be its harbour. Visitors are advised to explore it via a trip to Manly or else a visit to Watsons Bay or maybe an excursion to Darling Harbour or possibly up the river to Parramatta. All those voyages are highly recommended.

The total foreshore of the harbour is a couple of hundred kms long and wriggles its way close to where hundreds of thousands of people live. Historically, the way to get from place to place was via the water. Ferries were available to transport the populace LONG before there were such things as under harbour motorways, metro services or the harbour bridge itself.

If one wants to understand the traditional relationship between Sydney and its harbour, why not take a ferry from Circular Quay to Mosman Bay and back? This blip is a spread of 6 images, illustrating the start of a quick trip into town from a sleepy harbourside suburb.

1. I am sauntering down from my bay side residence to the local ferry wharf (yeah ... right)
2. I have just tapped onto the transport system with my Opal card and am making my way to the boarding point.
3. The regular 30 minute service is in sight. It is a "first fleet" ferry called the "Borrowdale".
4. I am getting ready to board and should be underway in a few minutes.
5. We are backing out into the bay before swinging about to head south west toward Circular Quay. Should be there in about 20 mins.
6. I am gazing back toward my Mosman neighbourhood (in my dreams). Think I might set out for a sail on the weekend. (ahem) Life is such a drag, don't you know?
