Stag beetle

I spotted this stag beetle when I was walking this afternoon. It was on the pavement so was lucky not to get squashed. They are stunning creatures but not my favourites so it was a quick photo and I was on my way again. It seems a bit early in the year for them, they are usually around in the late summer. Having looked at Google about stag beetles it may be that this is a female stag beetle or even a lesser stag beetle. Maybe someone will know!
