Every Picture Tells .....

Harpooned :(

Whaling in the Azores began around 1830, first with American whaling boats, which came to hunt for sperm whales until the end of the 19th century. After this, the activity continued at the initiative of the island's own inhabitants, who ventured to sea in narrow rowing-boats (Canoas).

This monument commemorates the whalers and whaling tradition on the island of Pico. It stands in front of the the Museu da Indústria Baleeira in São Roque.

The life-sized monument shows a harpooner in one of the small boats.  The bronze sculpture was designed by Soares Branco and inaugurated on July 27, 2000.

Fortunately whaling ceased here in the late 1980s and has been replaced by "whale watching".
