Day 5 - Kaunas,Lithuania

We were so tired yesterday we were asleep by 9 which was good as it meant we were up for an early start.

The new motorway hadn’t got the service stations built but google helped me find diesel not far off as we were low. It wasn’t long before we reached the border and drove straight through past the old derelict border control buildings into Lithuania, a new country for both of us. The money the EU is investing in roads must be huge - the motorway was under construction in parts but we kept moving and after a drive of 234 miles this morning we reached our campsite in Kaunas. €26 a night with hook up. It’s on the river but we are behind a wire fence reminiscent of CenterParcs - but small and we need waste disposal and water. In fact it’s good we got here early as it’s now full. We are 2 hours ahead of Uk time.

Nathaniel had his last night yesterday instead of tonight as 2 shows the other boy was in were cancelled due to illness so they swapped. But it was lucky for Nathaniel as the artistic director of the National was there for his last night and he and #3 daughter were introduced to him. He complimented Nathaniel on his performance. Daughter says normal life will be quite a comedown for him - being picked for the school skipping race won’t be the same thrill.

We are going to have a chilled afternoon reading our books and relaxing. I’m disappointed that I just started the Laura Cumming book last night as now I find one of the paintings by Fabritius that I love, “The Sentry” is at a gallery in Schwerin where we’d just been.

We had a walk beside the lake and stopped to watch a water skier. Instead of a speedboat he was towed by an environmentally friendly pulley.

I’m going to make a carbonara- with mushrooms, onions and lots of garlic instead of pancetta.
