Trip Away Day 6#
HSB - Harzer Schmatspur Bahnen !
Welcome to the Harz Narrow Gauge Railway, a network of 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 3?8 in) gauge railways in the Harz Mountains, in Central Germany. The first lines were opened in 1887 and there are still some locomotives running that were built in the 1890's. This became a private railway in 1993 and is very popular with tourists.
Our base was Wernigerode, where many of the steam rail trips begin and there is a large engine shed for preparation and maintenance of the engines.
Brocken is the most popular destination on the network. It is an old Soviet listening post on top of the tallest peak in the Harz mountains, accessed by a spiral railway line. Most of the steam engines are 1950s vintage 2-10-2 tank locomotives.
