Good and Evil

The Silent Movie Production.  That’s what they call the staging of this version of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, which takes inspiration from old films and graphics, modern animation, comic books, and pure fantasy. Incredibly clever at some points, but also incredibly distracting, and, I think, very limiting for the performers. It was also exhausting to watch the simulated flicker of an old movie that washed over the stage for the entire performance. So, mixed reviews, but a nice day in the city: dim sum, a walk in the balmy air, a nice ride along the coast. The thick fog in the morning meant you needed to make sure your lights were on while driving—it was nearly impossible to see oncoming traffic. Welcome to summer on the Central Coast!

The photo shows City Hall from the outdoor balcony of the Opera House, seen through the banner, and then reversed so you can read the title.

If you’re interested in the details of the production, try this link. It’s easier than if I tried to describe everything.
