For many years, our holidays started with a picture from Portsmouth on our overnight outgoing ferry, and my first site of France was Intra-Muros - the walled town that is part of Saint-Malo. Now the situation is reversed and Portsmouth is the start of my journey home and Intra-Muros is the point of arrival home.

The crossing was fine and uneventful - exactly as one would like, and though the sea wasn't mill-pond flat with the surface of a mirror, it was pretty easy sailing for the MV Bretagne. Today's back blip is the little lighthouse on the end of the harbour wall, with Intra-Muros behind.

I'm not sure what else will happen this year, but this crossing could be my last onboard the MV Bretagne. The ship is due to be replaced by a new ferry, the MV Saint-Malo early next year, and the MV Bretagne normally comes out of service in the autumn for an annual refit, so there is a good chance that on my next visit to the UK it will either be the MV Pont-Aven on winter duty or the new MV Saint-Malo... I'm hoping that on the last day of service there will be something in town and I can go down and take pictures of it before it sails off for the last time.
