Breakey Blips

A day of contrasts

Nature has a way of reminding us that we are small, and that our lifetimes are short in the big picture of the world.

Yet in our hubris, we resist this lesson. This is Milano Centrale, the big railway station in Milan, and one of the key railway junctions of Europe. It was built to reflect the power and sense of significance of humans aspire to.
It was indeed massive, with a bewildering collection of references.  Roman imperial friezes, Greek gods and the names of modern thinkers ( Tomaso Edison!) all jostled for space in that towering building.

But I spent my last morning in Switzerland visiting the Aletsch Glacier. (In my extra shot) 20km of ice flow down the mountain in a display of grandure that works on a time-scale completely different from human time.
I wish I could say that it was untouched by humans, but of course, it has become significantly shorter in recent years due to our unerring ability to use and abuse the world's resources.

It was a marvellous day, of highs and lows, with a chance to experience the gift of travel.
