The Castle Ruins...
Was at Castlemilk Stables a few days ago and this week for meetings... This is the Ruins of the Mid 15th Century 'Tower House' that was built for the Stuart family. Over the 17th to the 19th Centuries the house was extensively rebuilt and renovated, becoming a large Manor House with landscaped grounds and gardens. The final phase of rebuilding took place in 1841 when the north wing was added... The Glasgow Corporation bought the land in a 'Compulsory Purchase Order' in 1936 and took over the house in 1938 after the Last Laird of Castlemilk died in it. They used it during World War 2 for evacuees from Guernsey, and it continued being a children's home for the next 20 years... It was sadly demolished in 1969... In all it's glory in extra photos... The lake you see in the old image is the one they filled in to just a burn... It was very picturesque.
