Snug hideaway

Walking through the woods something caught my eye. At first I thought it was a bolt screwed into a tree trunk.  Then I realised that it was a snail that had worked its way under the edge of a piece of bark. I've never seen anything like this before. I wonder if it's normal behaviour.
