Aquaduct les Ferreres

Roman aqueduct Les Ferreres
This gigantic aqueduct, just outside the city of Tarragona, is as impressive as the ancient Roman amphitheater on the coast. The Roman aqueduct Les Ferreres dates from the 1st century BC. According to legend, the devil himself built the aqueduct.

Roman aqueduct Les Ferreres
The Tarragona aqueduct is 217 meters long. The stone blocks were laid in 25 arches on two levels 27 meters high. The Romans did not use mortar. This bridge was part of the Roman water supply system that supplied the ancient city of Tarraco with water from the Francolí River. In 2000, UNESCO declared the bridge a cultural heritage of humanity.

Devil's Bridge
This aqueduct is popularly called the Devil's Bridge. According to legend, people tried to build an aqueduct themselves, but the bridge collapsed due to a strong wind and water flow. Ancient engineers shouted that even the devil could not complete the work in 1000 years. After the words were spoken, the devil appeared. He would build the bridge in just one night. In return, he would take the soul of the first inhabitant of Taracco (the former name of Tarragona), who would walk across the bridge. The people accepted the offer. The devil kept his promise and built the bridge in one night. He expected to receive a soul, but the inhabitants acted cunningly. They let a donkey cross the bridge first.
