La Rabida
We’ve learnt so much today and know far more about Christopher Columbus than the first line of the rhyme
… In 1492 Columbus sailed the sea of blue..
Columbus stayed here in Huelva with his young son after his wife died in childbirth with their second child. He was welcomed by the two Perez brothers and was here for seven years planning and getting funding for his voyage of discovery. The monastery was one of only two places in the world where navigation based on the position of the stars was studied.
Back on board for lunch and an afternoon sailing to Cadiz where this evening we’ve visited a bar for an amazing Flamenco show. Before that, a Spanish dinner evening with tapas and paella. The dining room had been spectacularly decorated and all waiters were dressed in Spanish style.
