Gold rush graves
Today we visited Hill End, once one of the largest gold towns in NSW and now a ghost town. When we were last here, about 20 years ago, many of the sites of former buildings were marked by photographs from the Holtermann Collection of gold rush photos. We have just seen the excellent new Holtermann museum in Gulgong and we were interested to see what developments might be evident in the interpretation of the Hill End site. Sadly, not many at all. Perhaps a lack of Government funding?
This is the cemetery at Tambaroora, another ghost town near Hill End. It’s a lovely peaceful spot encircled by gum trees and it’s hard to see why these graves needed to be protected by iron railings. Surely not from grave robbers?
