Under the Weather

I think it’s finished. I showed the first two stages day before yesterday. After that comes the transformation to the final painting. That can be slow or quick depending on the painting. At some point the painting joins the creative process. It becomes a dance. You make a change. It asks for another change to balance or emphasize the change you made and so it goes. I work with Posca pens, acrylic paint, alcohol pens, acrylic ink, even water painted over sprayed areas. I’m looking at value, the movement of dark and light spaces, color, complementary and bright vs dull. Bright, light and warm to attract the eye. Dark, cool and dull to set off the bright areas. The name usually doesn’t come to me until late in the process. One of the hardest parts is knowing when to stop. I’m not completely sure this is done. But I’ve put it away and put up another canvas so I can look back later after a break.
