Living my dream

Culprits

I have finally figured out why I have proximal hamstring tendinopathy again. I had the bright idea to read my diary and check the occasions when I've had a flare-up.

Almost immediately two things fell into place: firstly that the problems have always been at this same time of year; and secondly that I identified and documented the cause on previous occasions.

In the autumn I move from Red Band gumboots - which are galosh-like - and worn with thin socks, to insulated Quatro gumboots - which are more tight-fitting - and thick socks.

I use the age-old toe-to-heel method of removing said gumboots. They slip off easily and with virtually no friction in summer. But the Quatros are a different story and take some heft to remove. So much heft that it strains my hamstring.

When I told my physiotherapist I thought this might be the cause of the PHT two years ago she laughed and agreed, saying that it's a common problem among her farmer patients.

From then on I resolved to always use the top step up onto the deck to lever off my gumboots, rather than my other foot. It is much less pully on my hammy. But between then and now I had completely forgotten that good intention.

The new meds might be helping, although after only one day it may be too soon for optimism.

Today's activity has largely consisted of making a Caerphilly cheese and walking with the Bean.

And for some reason I am way behind with Blips...
