Anderton Boat Lift

Photo club outing to Anderton Boat Lift. This marvel of Victorian engineering moves canal boats from the Trent and Mersey canal at the top to the River Weaver at the bottom, a total drop of 50 feet. Built in 1875 it was the only working lift of its type in the British Isles until the opening of the Falkirk Wheel in 2002. In this image you can see the two caissons carrying canal boats. The one on the left (orange jacket) is rising whilst the one on the right carrying the blue boat is descending. The whole mechanism is operated hydraulically.
