The Green Man and the Bride's Hand
I went to St James's church in Longdon, Staffordshire today. It is a beautiful Norman church, and I took lots of photos, but I thought these two were interesting. One of the capitals in the porch has a carving of the pagan "Green Man". Nearby a "Bride's Hand" has been carved into the wall. I had never seen one of these before, but according to a booklet in the church, the bride would place her hand on this when entering the church, for good fortune. There was no indication of its likely date though, so I am not sure if it too dated from Norman times.
