Repairing the Bridge
They are doing repairs to the Siuslaw bridge. This is an historic bridge built as part of the work project implemented by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to provide jobs for people during the Great Depression. My father, who had been a silent film actor benefitted from this same program because it also profided work for actors and artists. Roosevelt recognized the need for those things in a society, too.
Many of these beautiful old bridges are being replaced while keeping a little piece of them for remembrance. Hopefully, this will never happen to our bridge. It wasn't that many years ago that people who lived south of the Siuslaw River had to ferry accross to get into town (about 70 years) This bridge was built for practicality but it was also built to be beautiful. We did not sacrifice one thing for the other. When the last of these bridges are gone, it will be very sad. Here's hoping the repairs will keep that from happening too soon.
